VERSATILE RUBBER GASKET
MATERIAL FOR FLUID SEALING
A sheet rubber gasket is a mechanical seal that is used to prevent leaks of gas or liquid, but can also be used as a barrier between two objects, such as metals or chemicals. They can even protect delicate mechanisms from environmental contamination, such as in a camera lens.
Gaskets are made to the shape and size of the application. The choice of rubber gasket material depends on the different physical properties that each rubber compound has, like durometer and tensile strength. Durometer refers to the hardness of a material or resistance to permanent indentation. The lower the durometer, the more supple and flexible the material, and conversely the higher the durometer the more rigid and denser the rubber gasket material.
This is why it is important to select the right kind of rubber gasket material for your application. Choosing a sheet rubber gasket without the right properties could cause the gasket to fail during use. Common materials include neoprene, EPDM, nitrile, silicone, and Santoprene.
